Clive Douglas

Australian landscapes in oil

Light, laid down in layers.

Clive Douglas builds each painting from thin, translucent layers of oil, colour over colour, until the light seems to come from inside the canvas.

The artist

An architect’s eye.

Clive Douglas was born in Auckland and came to Melbourne in 1975 to study Interior Design and Architecture at RMIT. For thirty years he ran his own architecture practice on the Mornington Peninsula, and since 2020 he has painted full time.

“A window to look through.” Clive’s phrase for the white board around his small works, and for what he wants every painting to be: a sense of place, more than a record of a view.
